Chapter Eleven

I sensed trouble brewing the moment the wind whipped past me, blowing down a weakened tree in the process. I parked the Beast in a small clearing, and we traveled the rest of the distance on foot.

“What’s going on?” Max had to shout to be heard over the noise.

“Nothing good.”

Each step grew harder as the wind pushed against me, forcing my eyes closed. Peering through two slits, I saw the funnel in the distance. It tore through the forest with abandon. I’d heard of tornadoes happening before the Great Eruption, but I’d never experienced one. The sun’s disappearance had resulted in changes in weather patterns, and even locations like Tornado Alley no longer suffered from unexpected twisters.

The presence of a tornado in the middle of The Wild was unprecedented and suggested supernatural forces at work. I wasn’t aware of any elemental witches powerful enough to conjure a tornado of this caliber.

I dodged a falling branch and remained huddled with Max against the base of a large oak tree as the air blew a torrent of leaves and sticks to the ground. The forest was already in poor condition; this unnatural event would devastate what remained. Even worse, the massive oak that served as our shield was now directly in the path of the twister.

“We need to move.” I bolted from behind the tree, although my speed was slowed considerably by the strong wind. Max fared better against the natural nemesis. I could tell he was holding back for my sake.

Lightning flashed in the sky. The sharp angles of light contrasted beautifully with the black canvas. If I weren’t in danger of dying, I’d sit here and watch for another strike.

The ground trembled as we raced away from the tornado’s path.

“A tornado and an earthquake?” Max queried.

It was strange. There could be an air witch and an earth witch working together, but the odds were low that there’d be coordinated magical activity that didn’t involve me.

This was something else.

We sought refuge behind a huge boulder, and I was thankful for the respite.

“Maybe we angered the god by taking his weapons and now he’s coming after us,” Max said. “Who’s the god of natural disasters?”

My body stiffened at the mention of natural disasters. If this was the work of the calamity demon, heads were going to roll.

Max gave me a speculative look. “You know the god?”

“No, but I know the demon.” And, more importantly, I knew how to defeat it.

“Stay here,” I ordered. I didn’t wait to see whether he complied. I scrambled from shelter and headed for the canyon, ducking under flying debris and leaping over branches along the way. Anger boiled the blood in my veins. I couldn’t let my emotions get the better of me, though. I needed to stay sharp if I expected to stuff the calamitous genie back in the bottle. First I had to find the guilty party because that was where I’d find the amulet.

As the tornado continued along its path, I spotted the cause of all this chaos.
